About Benjamin Smith

While pursuing my degree at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, I developed a strong passion for advocating for underserved communities and providing supportive services, interventions, and education to families. Starting as a camp counselor and peer mentor, I aimed to be a positive role model for families, men of color, and children/teenagers during critical life transitions. As I took on the role of an assistant teacher at the East Harlem Tutorial Program, I honed my skills in teaching, planning, and patience, creating safe environments and offering academic support.Upon graduating in 2017 with a degree in Criminology and a minor in Dispute Resolution, I transitioned from a Playground Associate to a Case Planner at Children’s Aid Medical Foster Care program and Domestic Violence preventive intervention program. This shift allowed me to gain extensive experience, fostering a passion for supporting families and communities in need. My focus evolved from law enforcement to a clinical and case management perspective, where transparency and genuine concern became central.In my role as a therapeutic case planner, I have successfully managed a caseload of 10-14 families, learning about self-care, vicarious trauma, leadership, and personal growth. I discovered the importance of amplifying the voices of communities and groups facing unheard challenges. Notable achievements include facilitating family reunions, establishing safe spaces for children and survivors, and organizing engaging educational activities for communities. Through continuous training, I've enhanced my skills to provide efficient and knowledgeable sessions for clients, contributing to my personal and professional growth. Notably, I am the second person in my family to graduate from college.
