Background
About Benjamin Snider
My name is Benjamin Snider, a graduate of the Biomedical Engineering Technology program at Durham College, and I work at Kingston Health Science Center as a Biomedical Technologist. I work with a little of everything, but my day to day tasks generally consists of repairing and maintaining equipment in the Operating Room, Endoscopy, and the Laboratory. On top of that, I also do any and every PM that is due, call we may receive, and broken device that may make its way to our shop. I also travel to northern Ontario, repairing and maintaining equipment in Moose Factory, Fort Albany, and Kashechewan. I have been a highly significant member in pioneering 3D printing in healthcare at KHSC. I began my journey into 3D printing by working on 3D design and fundamental 3D printing concepts as a personal hobby, and saw the possibility to incorporate it into our Healthcare environment. It is a new concept, so we are continually analyzing and improving our practices until it because a viable and safe option in medical device repair. It is a significant improvement as it provides the opportunity for us to replace parts that may be discontinued, therefore extending the lives of older devices significantly, it can allow customizable parts to improve on a device, and it can reduce the cost of replacement parts significantly. It is still a work in progress, but who knows what may lie ahead with the endless opportunities that 3D printing in Healthcare presents. In this career, it is no secret that we are all learning everyday, further perfecting our craft with each device we interact with. Personally, I strive to continually improve my skills and abilities as there is always something to learn in this field, no matter how much you know. I push myself beyond what I think I am capable of everyday, and take on challenges to improve my skill set. I always think about the patients and users first, as once a device leaves my workstation it will be directly interacting with both, therefore ensuring I perform my duties to the best of my ability everytime.
