About Benjamin Taylor

I am interested in stochastic simulation and modelling of complex systems. My background as an academic was initially in the area of particle filtering and I moved into the area of spatiotemporal statistics as a postdoc and then later a lecturer (assistant professor) at Lancaster University. For two years, I held the position of Lead Data Scientist at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, before moving back into academia first as a Senior Researcher, at Lancaster then as Lecturer in Statistics at University College Cork, where I am currently based. I am passionate about trying to capture essential features of systems in ways that are intuitive, thinking through the inferential challenges that result from different modelling assumptions and designing ways to overcome those challenges - either by developing and applying theory and algorithms, or by levering advanced computing technologies. I'm a full-stack data scientist, capable of working on anything from coding simple analyses in R to both the design and implementation of advanced Monte Carlo algorithms in C / CUDA and their presentation in the form of web-pages and journal articles. I have over 30 years experience as a computer programmer in various languages, I have authored 25 journal articles, 8 software packages in R/CUDA and I have supervised 5 PhD students.
