I see my work as a chaplain as one of permission and witness. Being the institutionally connected person at allows me to …allow. I have a badge and a working knowledge of the facility. I have a personal connection with the staff and access to spaces patients and their families wouldn’t go. People often looked to me in wonder, “Is this ok?” I always respond, “Everything is ok.” I give permission for them to feel what they are feeling, sit where they need to feel comfortable, and ask all the questions they need to ask. The presence of a witness can make things more real. I say things like “This is really happening.” “Yes, I saw that, too.” “No, you are not crazy.” “I agree this is really hard and painful.” What an honor to just be there, in the room, or even at the door- leaning into each moment just to be… with. That’s what I do – no other motive – no medical necessity. Extra. just for you… seeing you. Being that sort of witness ties deeply into my sense of who I am and my purpose in the world.
