About Bernadette Azzie

Dr Azzie has 27 years experience, mostly in the mining/quarrying and consulting industry. Her experience includes developing and carrying out sampling programs, site investigations, environmental assessments, mine waste characterization studies and predictive water quality modelling, including acid mine drainage and metal mobility predictions across Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia, South and North America. She has worked in industrial minerals as well as a range of commodities, including coal, precious, base and ferrous metals, phosphate, uranium and diamonds. In mine waste characterization studies she has developed baseline geochemical data which is carried through to the mine planning stage. Hydrogeochemical modelling experience includes geochemical speciation modelling using PHREEQC to predict long-term water quality at several proposed and active underground and open pit mines, as well as risk assessment studies. She has good experience in relation to water quality assessment and water management practices, particularly in the extractive minerals industry, from exploration through the operational phase to mine closure. Dr Azzie has been involved in the implementation of ISO14001 as well as safety systems on a number of sites and has also conducted numerous compliance, due diligence and closure audits. This has been facilitated by her wide range in experience in environmental, health and safety aspects. She also has a strong Sustainable Development grounding which has developed as a result of her involvement on many mine closure projects over the years. She has been involved in projects on national and international scales, and developed a variety of project management, client management and team organizational skills. She has successfully managed numerous mining and land development projects, with budgets of over Dr Azzie completed a MSc in water quality and reuse potential, and a PhD in water chemistry, in which she essentially developed a new classification of mine waters reflecting geochemical origin and quality.
