About Bernard Steer

Bernie is accredited as a South Australian Level 1 Building Surveyor under the SA Government Accredited Professional Scheme and is currently employed as the Senior Building Officer at the City of Adelaide. His primary role at City of Adelaide is the Presiding Member of the City of Adelaide Building Fire Safety Committee and he has worked at the City of Adelaide since 2006, with extensive experience in building rules assessment and building compliance. Prior to working at City of Adelaide he spent 8 years in building policy with the SA Government Building Policy Unit. Bernie is also a director of a building consultancy company 2 Acres Consulting, which primarily provides research and advice on building rules matters. He is passionate about building surveying, in particular the ongoing fire safety of existing buildings. Bernie is an Occasional Member of the State Planning Commission, Building Technical Panel and is a past Commissioner of the Building Rules Assessment Commission. Bernie's skills include building surveying assessment and compliance, building policy formulation, building education in the VET sector, advisory group representation to the education and building surveying sector. He also has extensive experience in the residential and commercial construction, in particular project management, contract administration, quantity surveying and estimation, site supervision and design draftsman. Bernie was actively involved with the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors for 12 years and was SA State Chapter President from 2008 to 20015, SA National Director from 2007 to 2015 and National Vice President from 2009 to 2014.
