She took her oncology training in the Royal Marsden, England and in Peter MacCallum, Melbourne, Australia. She also has an MSc. in Health informatics from Trinity with a masters thesis in Breast Cancer. Bernie is an Assistant Director of Nursing in the Marie Keating Foundation. She is manager for several programmes including a free schools cancer awareness programme for 1st - 6th years, Corporate Wellness Programme and BRCA services. She is responsible for creating and updating cancer awareness materials and a suite of cancer awareness presentations on all the most common cancer types for community, corporate wellness and the school’s cancer awareness programme. Director of Nursing in Point of Care Health Services Ltd for 9 years. Her role included but not limited to, managing 2 national immunotherapy Patient Support Programmes (PSP). This involved supporting patients in their homes while on immunotherapy, reporting Adverse Events, liaising with patients referring team, creating patient video's for PSP website and liaising with pharma company who set up the PSP. Bernie also managed a national hospital-based patient adherence programme for patients on haemo and peritoneal dialysis. She also assisted in the coordination of the HSE Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT) programme. Bernie was also responsible for training and education of new and existing nurses in Point of Care. She was also a lecturer in Anatomy and Physiology for an ITEC Diploma Course and an exam marker for the Bachelor in Nursing Studies, in TCD. She helped to establish the 'Infusion Nurses Association (INS) of Ireland and the UK, an affiliate of the INS America and assisted Irish and UK nurses to take an American nursing certificate of infusion (Certified Registered Nurse of Infusion - CRNI) Her belief is that knowledge empowers the individual and helps them make more informed choices about their health and wellbeing.
