Bert van Duin has over 30 years of experience in the analysis, planning, design and management of urban drainage, stormwater management and watershed management projects in western Canada and Ontario. As Drainage Technical Lead at the City of Calgary Water Resources – Infrastructure Planning he is a resource to all of Water Resources in stormwater management, specifically related to the practical implementation of sustainable drainage practices. He is responsible for the evolution of Calgary’s stormwater management practice including updates to Calgary's Stormwater Management & Design Manual and the creation of the City of Calgary LID Modules. His responsibilities also include coaching and mentoring of staff, and he oversees training associated with erosion and sediment control, stormwater management and low impact development. He also guides Water Resources’ efforts in stormwater research, overseeing the new Drainage Knowledge Program. He is Secretary of Water Resources’ Drainage Infrastructure Planning Governance Committee and chairs the Technical Working Group that reports to this committee. Prior, he was responsible for providing stormwater and watershed management services in the Calgary area to the land development industry, municipal government, and provincial government. In this capacity, he has overseen the work of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers, planners, landscape architects and GIS specialists. He was the project manager and team leader for the Model Calibration/ Verification and Best Management Practices Scoping Studies for the City of Calgary and the Nose Creek Basin Instream Flow Needs Study for the Nose Creek Basin Watershed Partnership. He was also the principal author of the 2007 Source Control Practices Handbook for the City of Calgary. Over the years, he has been involved with the design and monitoring of several BMP pilot studies including permeable pavement, bioretention, green roofs, lot-level control, and enhanced sedimentation.
