IT-systems are nowadays an essential part of every company and every organisation. They support and smooth the daily work of many people. However business is constantly moving and therefore IT systems have to be flexible and ready to evolve with the business needs. That puts extra challenges to the software development processes and technologies.My experience has learned that many knowledge intensive systems such as document management systems, contract management systems and CRM's, become future proof when the business knowledge is separate from but well integrated in the application source code. Moreover today’s systems do not operate in isolation. They are part of a network sharing via thousands of methods information with each other. This IT landscape requires answers at technological, semantical, organizational and legal levels. To create sustainable data interoperable systems I believe machines should assist us. Only then IT systems can becomes sustainable. Machines can aid us deploying environments (deployment as code, containerization for build once run anywhere); source control systems can aid us in transparency of the software code, but also for content; technical and data standards result in interoperable data exchange possibilities on which smart clients may act; etc.In my PHD I studied formal knowledge representation languages to express business domains. I built an abductive solver, called the A-system, which integrates Constraint Logic Programming with a general First Order Logic system. At Mission Critical, the research experience have been complemented with software engineering skills while building upon the same principles knowledge intensive applications. At TenForce both my research skills are enhanced by leading, initiating research projects at European level, but also my client facing skills are improved by being responsible for projects, technical solutions or expert advice.
