About Bert Vanmechelen
I am currently active as the scientific coordinator responsible for sequencing, molecular virology and data management at the KU Leuven VirusBank Platform. The mission of the VirusBank Platform is to maximize societal preparedness against future epidemics and pandemics by developing a state-of-the-art assay toolbox for relevant virus families to facilitate the development of new preventive and therapeutic measures. Prior to this, I worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the laboratory of clinical and epidemiological virology of the KU Leuven, where I continued the work of my two doctoral theses, respectively on the development and application of high-throughput screening assays for the study of high-risk viral pathogens and the use of nanopore sequencing for the discovery of novel potentially zoonotic viruses.
