Here is an old familiar story- mountains of data, that no one seems to have access to. After moving to Calgary, I was working on a project involving municipal arts funding. It's hard to convince politicians of a funding increase when you don't have the evidence to prove your need. After months of data digging, spreadsheets and conversations, I determined that Calgary was the lowest in municipal arts funding among its Canadian peers. This evidence was reviewed by the Mayor and presented to councilors as they prepared to vote on the next budget cycle. After eight years of a freeze on municipal arts funding, City Council voted to double arts spending.
