About Bethany Hoffman

I am an award-winning editor and writer skilled at translating health and biomedical concepts into plain language and easy-to-understand content for websites, patient education materials, newsletters, trainings, and other materials for consumer and professional audiences. My work helps people understand complex topics, including chronic diseases, pain management, substance abuse, mental illness, and systems of care. I have over 15 years’ experience addressing topics in health and medical science for health and wellness digital media, universities, contract research organizations, health care finance strategists, nonprofit organizations, and federal agencies including NIH, CDC, FDA, SAMHSA, the Administration for Children and Families, and the HHS Office of Women’s Health. As a health communicator, I seek to distill the never-ending stream of complicated health information into plain language to empower consumers and providers to make effective choices. I’m dedicated to helping people understand and act upon the health information that affects their lives. I bring empathy to my writing, working hard to guide the message, language, and tone to connect with the audience on their own terms, and I’m good at listening to and mediating among groups of technical professionals and lay audiences. One of my favorite things to do, when starting a new project involving unfamiliar subject matter, is to learn all about the topic and get my arms around it, start the conversation about how to best articulate the message, and come up with a first draft for the team to respond to. It helps people get into a creative mindset and think in collaboration. In my life as well as my work I am driven to understand how health and disability affect the human experience. My intellectual passions include medieval history, natural history, antique photos, museums, and Yiddish culture and language. I also get a kick out of snorkeling on coral reefs.
