About Bhaskar Sur

Dr. Bhaskar Sur is Director of the Safety and Security S&T program at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, Canada’s premier nuclear science and technology organization. CNL’s Safety and Security S&T program develops solutions and sustains capabilities in nuclear safety, emergency response, nuclear forensics, non-proliferation, counter-terrorism and nuclear cyber security in support of Canadian federal departments and agencies, and the nuclear industry. Dr. Sur’s 30+ year career in nuclear R&D has spanned fundamental research in nuclear and particle physics to applied industrial research in nuclear instrumentation and control systems. He has participated in and led research and development projects that have generated an estimated $500M in revenue and more than 150 publications in high quality scientific journals including Nature and Physical Review Letters. In addition, Dr. Sur holds six industrial patents on nuclear instrumentation and process systems. Early in his scientific career, Dr. Sur was deeply involved with the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, the ground-breaking Canadian and international project for which all collaborators, including Dr. Sur, were awarded the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, and whose project director was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics. Dr. Sur received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur India; and his Ph.D. in Experimental Nuclear Physics from the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. He worked at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley California and Queen’s University, Kingston Ontario before joining Atomic Energy of Canada’s Chalk River Laboratories in 1992. Dr. Sur worked successively as a Research Scientist, Manager of Applied Physics Branch and Director of the Nuclear Science Division, before his current appointment as Program Director to help lead the transformation of the S&T organization at CNL.
