Bijit Sarkar ranked 104th all india and got into Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, the premier technological institute of India. He graduated in 1981 with honours in Naval Architecture. He joined a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy firm which was executing the detail design of a Landing Ship Tank ( Large) for Indian Navy that was being built by Gardenreach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Calcutta. As the only naval architect of the firm, and fresh out of college, this was a grueling five year, guiding a team of fifty engineers and draughtsmen, during which time he worked on the composite detail designs of a number of ships for Indian navy, Oil & Natural Gas Commission, and Calcutta Port. In 1989, one fine morning, he thought he was doing more mundane managerial work than creative. In ten minutes, he submitted his resignation and started his own consultancy firm, FOUNDATION. The motto of FOUNDATION is "Excellence in Engineering"- which also is held by him as his personal motto. For Bijit, the ultimate client is the ship, or the project he is working on and he believes irrespective of the fees, the best efforts should always be given for a design project. FOUNDATION did a variety of design for a huge variety of industries. Bijit put up a sign in his office," We have done so much for so long with so little, that we are confident of doing almost anything with nothing. He was vice-president Technical of a Calcutta based multinational. Joined Pipavav shipyard, the largest shipyard in India, as Vice-president - Design and Process Engineering. Presently attached to the same organization as Senior Design Consultation and still having fun with technology. During his long career, Bijit has shown his mettle by designing, and also building, a wide variety of ships and small crafts, not to mention other engineering projects. He is best in building a team and taking them to reach a level not believed possible.
