I have a confession. Don’t hold it against me – I worked at Freddie Mac for twenty years! Yes, I was there during the housing meltdown. Apologies aside, I’ve helped sr. management manage G&A expenses through a variety of cost accounting methodologies and tools, using everything from: · Rolling eighteen-month forecasts, to · ABC/M, to · Project accounting, to · Zero-based budgeting, to · Performance management/Balanced scorecards, to · EVM/CBAs/NRVs. As a manager and director, I produced $5M in savings for market data services by controlling service access, terminating redundant offerings, and simplifying access points. I identified product offerings that were outright “losers;” stopping them produced $25M in annual savings. I spear-headed a move to centralize G&A oversight & admin services – budget, forecast, HR admin, AP, GAAP accounting, and space/desktop management – across Freddie's lines-of-business. My span of control was $600M. You name it, I’ve applied managerial accounting techniques or simple “roll-up your sleeves” analysis to solve business problems and produce cost savings. I love solving puzzles. Which aircraft costs the most to repair and what’s driving that cost? Can transfer pricing assignments help us manage AND reduce expenditures? What’s the long-term impact of accelerating internally developed software on depreciation and funding requirements? I am, unashamedly, a “company man” first. On my office blackboard, I had the question, “Have you made Freddie proud today?” It was a question often asked - my closing thought every day. I’m proud to say that several of my direct reports have gone on to leadership positions within Freddie Mac and other companies. Education matters; it provides the basis for ongoing success.
