About Bill Cole

For the past half-century, I've enjoyed a geology career that took me to many different geographic locations and environments, including:* geohazards assessments in Alaska, California, Hawaii, Nevada, Texas, Utah, Washington, China, & Armenia, including safety reviews of over 100 dams in support of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) risk reduction program and various state dam safety programs;* seafloor mapping and outcrop sampling using marine geophysics, scuba diving, dredging, dart cores and drilled borings in the Bering Sea, Beaufort Sea, Gulf of Mexico, So. California borderland, North Sea, and Yellow Sea;* earth movement and related distress investigations, including large landslides, e.g, Big Rock Mesa (Malibu), Love Creek (Santa Cruz County), Ocean Trails (Palos Verdes Peninsula), Manoa-Aina Haina Valleys (Oahu, Hawaii); subway tunnel subsidence and related building distress (Los Angeles); and stream flow/sedimentation impacts (e.g, Ventura Harbor);* geologic field mapping in remote areas of the western USA (e.g, Basin and Range, California Coast Ranges, Cascades, Transverse Ranges, Sierra Nevada). My technical focus has been on geologic interpretation informed by surface mapping/subsurface exploration/remote sensing/monitoring to provide:(1) ground movement and earthquake hazards assessments in onshore and offshore environments;(2) geotechnical characterization and rock kinematic analyses of foundations and slopes for hydroelectric facilities, hospitals and other infrastructure; and (3) subject matter expertise for Independent Review Boards and multidisciplinary design teams.
