About Bill Cotter

I'm an experienced qualitative User Experience (UX) Researcher with over 10 years of demonstrated experience in academic, civil service, and industry research. Methodologically, some of the tools that I particularly enjoy (if they're right for the project) include: interviewing, diary studies, ethnography, contextual inquiry, narrative analysis, card sorts, and concept testing. Before starting my UX career, I completed a joint Ph.D. in Anthropology & Linguistics and conducted qualitative and quantitative field research all over the world. That included doing qualitative field research in coffee shops throughout the US, focusing on the language of consumer marketing and branding. It also included doing qualitative and quantitative field research throughout the Middle East in Palestine and Jordan, where I studied how dialects of Arabic change over time and how large-scale economic development affects urban change. Currently, I'm a UX Researcher at Meta in the Monetization org. My research focuses on artificial intelligence in advertising, the ethics of AI in ads, the experiences of advertisers who use our ads system, and how people interact with our products in the moment.
