Background
About Bill Hay
I have had an extensive and well rounded career in the construction industry. From residential, commercial but most of the time has been spent in the industrial sector. I started out as a Mason with a local Ontario union and completed my red seal certification in 2005. In 2007 opportunities lead me west to start a career in oil & gas where I started my career in Health & Safety, by 2009 I completed my national Construction Safety Officer Certificate through the ACSA. I then went to Suncor Energy and spent the next 5 years as an Infrastructure & Logistics Coordinator for major maintenance projects. I was managing schedules, understanding critical path needs and forecasting potential issues that could slow down the projects schedule. Managing multi-million dollar budgets, collaboration with multiple business units and contractors to solve problems to keep our schedule was a daily task. I completed my Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) through Keyano College, which gave me a technical understanding of maintenance strategies and management skills I needed to take on the lead roll in our group. I managed 12 team members and oversaw multiple contractors and trades. The oil crash in 2015, the company downsized and I went back into Health & Safety field with an industrial electrical contractor in Ft. McMurray. I worked on multiple sites on different multi billion dollar projects, such as a water extractor (first of its kind) at Syncrude, New tank farm build at Suncor and initiated a new maintenance contract at Fort Hills. My responsibilities at all these projects was to integrate our safety programs into each project and ensure it aligns with the clients programs and values. I manage training records, hazards assessments, site audits & inspections, Safety meetings and talks. I am efficient in incident investigations, using a number of methods including basic practices such as SCAT, 5 whys, Safety Function Analysis to more involved systems like TaRoot and ICAM, all of which have come with many hours of practice. Finally in 2018, my path lead me back home to Ontario where I took my current position with Aecon for the Darlington Nuclear refurbishment project. The move was challenging more so the other companies because now there is the radiation safety aspect that is included in work planning and execution. There is a lot to understand in this industry, but just like any new skill, with a little work we get over the learning curve and I have had a long career here with Aecon and I look forward to seeing where the next step in my career takes me.
