About Bill Higgins

Bill Higgins received his B.S. from Boston College in 1969, and his Ph.D. from Florida Sate University in 1973. In August of 1973, Bill began his faculty career at Maryland as an Assistant Professor of Zoology. Forty-one years later, Bill retired from Maryland with Emeritus status in the Department of Biology. Along the way he has served as the first Campus Retention Coordinator, Acting Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture and of the College of Life Sciences. Bill has secured over 3 million dollars in extramural funding for the college’s instructional programs, won many teaching awards including the Kirwan Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education, co-founded the UNIV 100 orientation course program, and serves as a Consultant Staff member in the Office of Intramural Training and Education of the NIH. Bill has taught Principles of Biology, Organismal Biology, Introductory Cellular Biology, Physiology of Excitable Cells, and for 41 years, Mammalian Physiology. Approximately of Bill’s former Mammalian Physiology students are now addressed as “Doctor”. Bill moved to live and work from the shore at Perdido Beach, AL and when not consulting, spends time on the water and the golf course.
