About Bill Knaus

Expertise: William A. Knaus, MD, FACP, FRACP, is an internationally recognized clinician scientist. He pioneered the development and use of algorithmic classification in clinical medicine through development and worldwide dissemination of the APACHE severity of illness system. He is currently developing universally useful and readily applied solutions to the challenge of health care data interoperability with Health Heritage, an automated Family Medical History application. Health Heritage provides users with the ability to obtain the electronic equivalent of a genetic counselor consultation for all inherited cancers and soon, all major diseases. IN 2021 Health Heritage was exclusively licensed to Genome Medical, a leading national provider of comprehensive genetic services to individuals, physicians, and health care systems.Dr. Knaus is a Fellow of the American and Royal Australasian College of Physicians, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Medicine, and Emeritus Professor at The University of Virginia. Professor & Founding Chair, Department of Health Evaluation Sciences recently re-titled Public Health Sciences (1996-2010) In September 2012 Dr. Knaus relocated from UVA to NorthShore University Health Systems Research Institute in Evanston, Ill. There he is heading the first production implementation of Health Heritage, a state of the art family medical history and genomic medicine support application.The current version of Health Heritage interfaces with electronic medical records, enables family networking of personal medical histories and incorporates new genomic data into assessments of personalized risk and recommendations for prevention and risk reduction. Health Heritage was sold to NantHealth, a planned comprehensive medical information integration startup lead by Dr. Patrick Soon Shiong. NantHealth was recently down sized and the license for Health Heritage was sold to AllScripts. In 2019 Allscripts returned that license to the original developers (myself, Wendy Cohn, The University of Virginia, and NorthShore University HealthSystems.
