Background
About Bineta Thiam
I am a dedicated Psychology BSc graduate with an MSc in Forensic Mental Health, specialising in Personality Disorders, and currently pursuing a PhD in Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. My research, titled "Knowing the Cosmologies and Healing Practices of the Lebu Nation in Senegal," focuses on the psychological and transformative goals of introducing a Lebu- and youth-generated healing model. This work combines cultural, psychological, and community-based approaches to develop innovative healing practices grounded in the cosmologies of the Lebu people. My academic and professional journey has been shaped by my deep interest in mental health from cultural and global perspectives. I have a strong passion for exploring psychological distress, group dynamics, and healing within diverse contexts, with a focus on transnational womanism and group analysis. Through my work with WASSOR, I have been actively advocating for mental health awareness and the destigmatisation of mental disorders in Senegal, leading initiatives to create gendered peer support groups and providing trauma-informed care for marginalised communities, including women and victims of violence. In addition to my advocacy, I serve as an Academic Associate at Nottingham Trent University, delivering lectures and seminars on Psychology and Personality Disorders. I am committed to advancing culturally sensitive psychological practices, equity, and inclusion in both academia and community settings. I am continuously seeking opportunities to collaborate on projects related to psychological well-being, cultural diversity, and social justice, with a focus on creating meaningful impact through research and community engagement. Key Areas of Interest: Psychological Distress in Cultural and Global Contexts Group Analysis and Psychotherapy Transnational Womanism Personality Disorders Forensic Mental Health Community-Generated Healing Models Feel free to connect with me for collaborations or discussions related to mental health advocacy, psychology, and social justice.
