About Birgit Wouters

Birgit is a lawyer and political scientist, holding a LL.M European Law from Maastricht University (NL) and a Master degree in International and European Politics from the University of Edinburgh (UK). Her research interests include the legal, political, social and ethical aspects of personalized medicine, data protection and privacy in data-driven medical and health research and the role of the patient and/or citizen in the participation society. Birgit is involved in the FAIR Health-project, a collaboration between IDS,#statistiekcbs and the Maastricht Study. Within this project, Birgit is responsible for the ethical, legal and societal issues surrounding big data health research and the accompanying privacy concerns. In addition, she is also co-responsible for the ethical-legal framework in relation to the Personal Health Train (LimburgMeet), which aims to connect distributed health data and create value by increasing the use of existing health data for citizens, healthcare and scientific research.
