About Bjorn Baselet

Dr. Bjorn Baselet studied biomedical sciences at University of Hasselt in Diepenbeek, Belgium. After obtaining his master degree, he performed a joint PhD at Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) and the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN) in the field of vascular radiobiology. Currently, he is a scientific collaborator at the Radiobiology Unit of SCK CEN where he is involved in supporting the coordination of different ESA funded space projects thereby (i) investigating the impact of space (simulated) conditions such as cosmic radiation and microgravity on human health (focus on immune system and skin) and (ii) investigating the radiation resistance mechanisms on rotifers. He is able to develop, plan and analyze different types of space-related biology experiments:(i) ground-based in vitro and in vivo experiments with different human cell types and organisms that are exposed to space simulated stressors including exposure to ionizing radiation, models for microgravity (random positioning machine, hind limb unloading rodent model), and psychological stress (stress hormone supplementation);(ii) human ground-based in vivo experiments using space simulated platforms (bed rest studies, isolation ISS space flight experiments with both cells and humans exposed to real space conditions.
