In my current line of work as an EMT, I medically assist patients in the community who have a mental health warrant for an involuntary psychiatric evaluation. We assess a patient’s physical health needs on scene and determine whether they need medical clearance for our facility and if indicated then transport the patient to the closest ER. Otherwise, we transport the patient to MCES and transfer the patient report and care to our crisis department. In between community calls, the ambulance department supports hospital staff on the 73-bed unit, particularly in the high-acuity zone, and responds to any internal emergency situations. Due to the nature of our calls, we ensure scene safety by responding to every scene with police assistance and ballistic wear, therefore having good bedside manner to quickly de-escalate crisis situations through the formation of patient trust is paramount. Furthermore, in these stressful situations it is necessary to remain calm and maintain your responsibilities under pressure. To obtain and verify this skill set, MCES put me through police education to become certified as a crisis intervention specialist.
