About Bora Kaplan

I came to the Sydney Bar in May 2010 at the age of 26 after a varied start to my legal career - first as tipstaff to the Hon Justice D A Ipp, AO, of the New South Wales Court of Appeal, then as a competition and trade practices lawyer at Mallesons Stephen Jaques, one of Australia's leading law firms, and then as a law lecturer and tutor. In 2008/2009, I undertook a master's degree in law (BCL) at the University of Oxford, focusing on private law subjects. During this time, I also completed mini-pupillages at a number of top-tier barristers' chambers in London, including One Essex Court. I currently practise from Nine Wentworth Chambers in Sydney. My principal areas of practice are commercial law and public law. Within these areas, I accept briefs in the following specialised fields: administrative, building and construction, competition and consumer protection, conflict of laws (private international law), constitutional, contract, employment, equity and trusts, insolvency, negligence and property. From 2013 to 2019, I was a junior commissioned officer (with the rank of flight lieutenant) in the Royal Australian Air Force Specialist Reserve. In this role, I worked in the areas of military administrative, discipline and operations law. I appeared before courts martial and Defence Force magistrates. I have a particular interest in the law of outer space and continue to be involved in this area outside of the Australian Defence Force. I am currently a reporter for the Commonwealth Law Reports and the Administrative Law Decisions. I was previously a reporter for the New South Wales Law Reports.
