About Boyd Ferris

My first endeavor with software started as a child with an old, beat-up Commodore 64 and a how-to-program-video-games book, and professionally began after leaving the Air Force and working for a local consultant company, giving me the opportunity to work with everything (databases, desktop apps, and websites) instead of the traditional you-do-only-one-type-of-thing when working at bigger companies.Wanting a change of scene, I moved to Seattle and worked for a startup (Big Fish Games) and then Microsoft. At Microsoft, I went from working on the Deep Zoom control to their UWP platform.My experience with software consulting, startups, and big companies provided me with great insights on approaching problems and building effective solutions- Knowing how to put all the pieces together as a consultant- Pragmatic decisions and speed with the startup- Working with large teams to build and ship a product at Microsoft. I have over fifteen years of professional experience as a full stack software developer, with the last four years working with designing and building secure distributed systems and applications- Microservices running on NodeJS deployed with Docker and AWS ECS Clusters, using Express, REST, MySQL and, React to deliver scalable and reliable products- ASP.NET Core, C#, XAML/UWP- Azure (App Services, Azure Functions, Service Bus, Blob Storage, Cosmos DB, SQL Server)- NodeJS, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript/Typescript with websites and PWA, Electron, and Cordova client appsAs a software architect- Recognized for finding solutions to any problem- Building systems that focus on maintainable code, minimizing bug impact with code architecture and logging, and reducing cloud infrastructure costs with smart designs
