Background
About Brad Moore
Okay, now for retirement. I “retired”in 2016 (first retirement) after 32 years with Munck/Swisslog. Planning to provide consulting services half time and enjoying life (golf, boating, fishing, etc …) the rest of the time. After a number of months, I realized that I also enjoyed my life as a material handling professional. So I went back to do what I do and with a new team and building new relationships. Jan 2017 thru Dec 2022. Six more years of fun. So, when I stated that I would retire at the end of 2022, it caused me to evaluate the definition of retirement. What is retirement? To many, it means stopping work and collecting your pension and social security as long as possible. Since I was having fun, I have queried many of my friends over the past year to define retirement, and many have the above as an initial definition. Then, I tell them I going to Consult, they all say “I thought you were “retired” with almost a sadness. However, a good friend recently defined retirement as “doing what you want to do and doing what is fun and what makes you happy.” So, there is the conundrum. What if I like doing what I do as a material handling professional, as well as many other activities, golfing, boating, fishing (i.e. catching), beer making, oysters farming, banjo playing, Dr. Suess poetry, Journey, general project construction (building stuff), and oh yes, making the best donuts on the Chesapeake Bay. All of that takes second fiddle to being married to Patti for 38 years, having two wonderful daughters of which I am immensely proud (and their families) and being a grandpa to my lovely 6-year-old granddaughter. So, my definition of retirement is all of the above. I enjoy life. I have a fantastic family. I have great friends and I have many hobbies (things to do). I look forward to using my acquired material handling skills (nearing 40 years) to support my friends as I can add value to their business and their life. I have no marketing; however, my door is always open to (defined opportunities) where I can help friends. I have also learned over the past few years, that my 45 years of business experiences and relationships has allowed me to connect really smart people with other really smart people to find great solutions. I find this extremely gratifying, and it makes me happy. In summary, HAVE FUN @work, HAVE FUN @home, HAVE FUN @ everything, or do it differently or do something else. I retire my way, with gratitude to all of my family and friends for making me better. Stay in touch, let me know how I can help. Thank you, Brad
