About Brad Schmidt

Chess has been a passion of mine since I began playing competitively in the 1970's. My official chess rating peaked in the 1980s when I earned the Expert title and achieved a rating of 2106. In 1986, I began my high school teaching career and took on the role of a chess coach and teacher. I have been coaching high school chess teams since that time and also doing private chess instruction in my spare time. During several summers, I have conducted chess camps at grade schools in our area. As a teacher, my most notable accomplishments in chess include coaching a team that placed 2nd and another team that placed 3rd at the Illinois High School State Chess Tournament, consistently one of the strongest high school tournaments in the United States. Teams that I have coached have also won several Gateway Chess League Championships and have placed 1st in each of the four IHSA Chess Sectionals that have been held to date. My strengths as a coach include a strong knowledge of the game, a good sense of humor, and the ability to design lessons appropriate to the ability levels of individual players.
