Background
About Bradley Johnston
Brad sat with guitar held at an angle uncannily reminiscent of Joe Pass. Not since the emergence of Martin Taylor has there been a more promising talent likely to assume the mantle of the legendary American…” (Russell Corbett, Bebop Spoken Here, UK) Bradley began his academic and practical journey at the age of fourteen when he gained a full scholarship to study at The Glasshouse ICM, Centre for Advanced Training programme, under the direct supervision of Dr James Birkett - studying the art of jazz guitar and advanced jazz theory. As a professional educator, Bradley is currently a member of the specialist teaching team on the CAT programme based at The Glasshouse International Centre of Music (formerly known as Sage Gateshead) and freelance peripatetic tutor across the North East. In addition, he also teaches at The Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, Ireland. He specialises in jazz guitar (both plectrum and finger-style techniques) and theoretical and practical approaches to improvisation, and works across the full range of jazz, folk, popular, rock and commercial music styles. He continues to teach across a broad range of educational settings, from primary education to adult education. Furthermore, he also leads multi-instrumental workshops on jazz and improvisation. Bradley has performed at many prestigious venues and festivals throughout the UK with a range of ensembles (including solo appearances), and alongside both national and international artists. Bradley holds a Masters of Music degree from Newcastle University, First Class BMus (Hons) in Jazz, Popular and Commercial music from the University of Sunderland, and a PGCE teaching qualification from Teesside University. “Technique, tone, volume, time, taste – he’s got it all’"(Russell Corbett review @Sage Gateshead, 2012).
