More than half of employed Americans have access to a 401(k) plan through their employer yet only around a third of them participate. Given that an employer sponsored retirement plan is one of the easiest ways to save for retirement those numbers are surprising, but not unexpected. Why is that? Our industry has made it hard for average Americans to determine if their 401(k) plan is a good deal or not. With so many different fees being deducted from accounts such as administrative costs and expense ratios it can be difficult to know how much your plan really costs. On top of that many participants are left to fend for themselves when it comes to savings goals and investing. Maybe that’s why so many don’t take advantage of their workplace retirement plan. As a fiduciary my goal is to help plan sponsors be able to offer the best 401(k) for their employees, but more importantly get their employees saving for retirement. If you can make it simple for participants to understand the plan, they will be more comfortable participating. My WHY is to make a meaningful impact on every participant I meet with and help them retire on their own terms.
