Background
About Brandon Riehm
Having spent 15-years racing motocross, 3-years of which was done professionally, the pressures associated with high performance and functionality for both me and a machine are all too familiar. From the engine to the chassis to the suspension components, no stone was left unturned in the pursuit of racing excellence. While many mistakes were made, I’ve learned invaluable lessons from the hiccups associated with pushing the boundaries of my own understanding of a machine. These lessons have provided me with a broader perspective on the ups and downs of research and development that are key concepts in mechanical engineering. My 8-years working in automotive repair has exposed me to countless failed components. Seeing various design flaws along with redesigned parts to alleviate the problem has exposed me to steps of the design processes necessary in a mass-produced machine with a high moving part count. However, not every design flaw has a readily available fix, and many times situations arose in which customized improvements were the only viable solution. Many hours were spent welding, brazing, drilling, milling, and reforming parts to reach the necessitated outcome of a viable fix in a non-ideal scenario. Being involved in the hands-on redesign process provided a fuller perspective on what constitutes a good and bad product along with the insight needed to improve a flawed design. This experience has provided me with a fuller understanding of the outside of the box thinking needed to identify flaws, alter and then ultimately improve on an existing design. My background in auto mechanics and professional motorcycle racing gives me a unique perspective on mechanical systems. This distinct viewpoint has fueled my fascination and provided motivation to master the mechanical engineering principles that empower the world we live in. In the workplace I’m looking to draw from my distinct background and couple it with passion and focus to become the best mechanical engineer I can possibly be.
