About Brandon Toombs

I was born and raised in rural Oregon to a construction family. I joined the Navy after high school. I was an ETN, which is a combination of a nuclear reactor operator and an instrument and control technician. The Navy was an amazing and exhausting experience. I got to see the world and learned to love travel; the mystery and peculiarity of different cultures continue to fascinate me. Memories of a giant iguana deciding to use my head as a perch while biking through Malaysia, or pulling into Spain after spending weeks on the ship and eating with friends at a restaurant where the server forced us all to get the pepper steak and sangria. I've spent about 12 years in nuclear generation operations, but my desire to write eventually won out. Now, I use my experience in one of the most difficult industries, demanding of perfection, to create high-level documentation. I would love to return to nuclear power as a tech writer. I love to read and scuba dive, so my travels these days tend to take me to a sandy beach with a nice coral reef and a hammock. I enjoy writing a little bit of everything. I enjoy taking complex ideas or equipment and breaking them down into bite-size pieces to make them more palatable. Nothing tests your knowledge better than explaining what you know to different audiences. I enjoy helping people learn new things. I like to create simplified diagrams of complex piping or electrical diagrams. There is a certain zen to the process of creating something aesthetically pleasing to the eye and simple enough to understand at a glance.
