About Brandon Tutkowski

Since graduating with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Notre Dame in 2018, I have been working as a tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Chemistry & Physics at Wingate University. I have been granted tenure at Wingate and hold the rank of Associate professor. I teach sections of organic lecture and lab, general chemistry lab, and a course in hazardous materials. My research interests include hazardous materials and flammability, organic reaction mechanisms, extractions, and chemical education. I believe in engaging my students with the material in the courses I teach in a variety of ways. I use active learning strategies, such as group work on problems posed during lectures, along with a partially 'flipped' course structure to keep students actively participating in class. This strategy, which combines the best of new technologies, multi-media presentations, and videos with traditional lecture is specifically designed to cater to different learning styles and is meant to improve student performance. Wingate University is a small liberal arts university located in Wingate, NC, about 25 miles southeast of Charlotte. Our students come to us from a variety of backgrounds and with a variety of interests, many of which are in the pre-professional programs (such as pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, etc.). We offer a traditional chemistry major designed to prepare students for graduate school in pharmacy, medicine, optometry, or any field of chemistry. We also offer majors in biochemistry and chemistry-business. These majors are specifically designed to prepare students for professional programs and to be leaders in industry.
