Background

About Breane Mahlitz

I am a passionate Michif/Apeetogosan/Otipemisiwak Nehiyaw (Métis-Cree) woman with maternal and paternal connections to the historic Métis communities of Alberta. I grew up and attended school in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton), proudly holding a Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta with a major in biological sciences and a minor in sociology. I recently graduated from the University of British Columbia's Indigenous Public Health graduate program, Canada's only Indigenous Public Health professional development opportunity at UBC's Faculty of Medicine. This is supported by my previous clinical research experience as a Junior Stroke Associate at the University of Alberta Hospital. I began working for the Rupertsland Institute: Métis Centre of Excellence, an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta, in 2021. This sparked my unwavering dedication to advancing the self-sufficiency and well-being of the Métis Nation. Inspired by the need for distinction-based policies and equity, I was admitted into law school, with the goal of using legal expertise to advocate for the health and human rights of Métis communities. From the Canadian Senate to the United Nations Headquarters, and from coast to coast across the Métis homeland and Turtle Island, I actively participate and advocate for Indigenous issues worldwide as a Youth Delegate. I am deeply committed to fostering community and cultural connections with Indigenous youth, serving as a dedicated volunteer and ambassador within my community. In my current role as Policy Advisor of Health at the Métis National Council, I hope to merge my academic rigour, cultural heritage, and enthusiasm to effectuate positive change, advocate for health equity, and champion policies that resonate deeply within the Métis community.
