About Brenda Sendejo

I am a an experienced educator-scholar and ethnographer of the Texas-Mexican borderlands. My core competencies include curriculum development, ethnographic and archival research, writing, museum education, exhibit coordination, inclusive pedagogies, and community building. My mission is to research, document, and circulate the stories, contributions, and life lessons of Chicana/Latina activists and feminists in Texas since the movement era. I do so through my writing and by fostering intergenerational dialogue and facilitating workshops among various groups in university and community settings. I bring a diverse and intersectional perspective to my field of expertise as a Chicana/Tejana anthropologist who explores the connections between spiritual and social justice activism in the U.S-Mexican borderlands and the intersections of gender and race. I am currently working on a book manuscript that examines spiritual activism within the Chicana feminist movement in Texas and women participants' impacts on the broader political and social landscape. The book is under contract with University of Arizona Press and is based on ethnographic research, oral history interviews, and archival research. I also direct the Latina History Project, a digital archive that showcases the voices and experiences of Chicana/Latina feminists and activists in Texas since the 1960s. Through this project, I have collaborated with students, faculty, staff, and community members to create and curate online exhibits and public events. Additionally, I serve as an ex-officio board member of MALCS, Mujeres Activas en Letras y Cambio Social, a national organization that supports the academic and professional development of Chicana/xLatina/x and Indigenous women and gender non-conforming activists, academics, and community members.
