Background

About Brendan Fleming

I am a College Tutor currently tutoring in the School of English at Trinity College Dublin. I was an honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Buckingham (UK) and am currently writing a book on the Irish author, George Moore (1852-1933,) to be published by Liverpool University Press. At University College Dublin, for my Master's Degree, I wrote my thesis on the fiction of John Banville. Inspired by Professor Declan Kiberd, my supervisor, I then went on to complete my Doctorate at the University of Oxford, at St Catherine's College, on the work of the Irish writer George Moore, under the supervision of Professor Terry Eagleton. I am an experienced university lecturer specialising in English, Irish, and American Literatures. I have taught and supervised students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. One of the things I am most proud of is how I have adapted my teaching to facilitate the wishes and needs of neurodiverse students. I am also experienced in student pastoral care. I had to take a break from teaching to look after a family member. Thankfully, they are well and I am now in a position to resume my teaching career. I have an extensive record of published original world class academic research, a bibliography of which can be seen on this page. I am passionate about teaching, and its transformative power to help students develop their critical thinking. What I find most satisfying is the privilege of encouraging students to gain the confidence to achieve their own critical voices. It is amazing and humbling. I approach any class, any student, with an open mind and an open heart. As soon as my book is completed, I will continue ongoing research on Elizabeth Bowen and James Joyce, and to continue exploring contemporary Irish writing, especially the work of Sara Baume, Neil Hegarty and John Banville. I also intend to continue teaching. The banner photograph is of Dublin Bay viewed from the Dublin Mountains.
