About Brent Matsuda

Brent is a senior ecologist/wildlife biologist with over 35 years of experience in the natural resources sector (consulting, research, education), particularly surveys, monitoring, and habitat and environmental impact assessment (birds, amphibians, small mammals, invertebrates, fish). He has developed technical specifications, and submitted or reviewed bids related to environmental services due to his strengths as a technical writer, editor, and senior reviewer. His experience encompasses all elements of environmental projects: as a field leader, supervisor and project manager, he has designed, overseen, coordinated, or facilitated projects involving volunteers, staff, and contractors, among multiple regulatory agencies, NGOs, Indigenous groups, private landowners, and other interest groups. This includes collecting, synthesizing, and QA/QC of data and methodology including habitat mapping, rating, and modeling; training survey crews; submitting permit applications, mitigation recommendations, reports, and memos under federal, provincial, municipal, and other regulatory requirements. As a former consultant in the USA, Brent also has experience working with the California Environmental Quality Act, US Endangered Species Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and Marine Mammal Protection Act. Brent has worked on field projects in temperate, tropical, polar, and desert conditions on four continents, is culturally competent, and has had working capacity speaking Spanish. He is an occasional part-time instructor in ecological restoration and conducts educational workshops in a variety of public forums. He is a recognized authority on amphibians and has extensive background with small mammal and bird surveys (waterfowl, seabirds, raptors) and invertebrate sampling (insects, millipedes, mollusks). His breadth of experience also includes hazardous waste surveys, water flow studies, fisheries, modeling, ecosystem mapping, wetland assessments, and building wetlands.
