About Brent Zey

Senior software architect working across many data intensive applications in Scala and Java. In day to day technical work I maintain and build Scala and Java services, TypeScript React and Redux UI, Kubernetes cloud infrastructure, and Postgres database infrastructure. I work heavily in Postgres for warehousing and core application data needs. This includes — but is not limited to — analytical and operational data engineering for our Scala core application as well as our Java data engineering services. To communicate across the cloud services, we utilize reactive messaging in our Scala code with akka brokers and reactive streams messaging in our Java data engineering services. These are all connected via RabbitMQ as our message bus. For newer projects, I wire up Java microservices with Quarkus, Kafka, and (a Kubernetes & microservice focused variant of Spring Boot/Framework). I am also highly skilled at delivering analytical reports and post-hoc analysis on benchmarking or dissection of engineering processes as related to failure modes and cost. Lastly, a large portion of my time is spent mentoring other senior software engineers, senior data engineers, software engineers, data engineers, and any junior hires. I help ease the onboarding process by spending time pair programming, conducting knowledge transfer on tech and domain specific topics, and high-touch code review.
