About Brett Simms

I have over fifteen years' experience as an analyst and researcher. I excel at wading through messy data, questioning anomalies, and communicating helpful information. I am motivated by curiosity and learning, and currently work in Maternal & Child Data & Analytics (DnA) at Alberta Health Services, with focus on relevant quality analyses. Throughout my career I have enjoyed many grass roots leadership roles, whether that be mentoring students in their careers, helping colleagues with workplace challenges, or simply bringing people together to achieve something significant. I believe that the difference between good and great is often a little empathy, or encouragement, and leveraging the strengths within a team. When called for I will lead by example. Technical skill set: I routinely employ SQL, R, Python and Tableau in my workflow. I am comfortable using statistics, embrace the challenge of working with non-tabular (i.e. JSON, XML, text) data, and have implemented predictive models where applicable. My current pet project investigates classifying free-text nursing notes using a combination of natural language processing techniques, and associated Python libraries. Fun fact: during my twenties I was the principal singer/songwriter for the rock band Starewell Along with my band mates Wade, Chris and Mark I learned the challenges of running a start-up business, as well as the importance of effective communication and maintaining the right relationships.
