About Brian Berger
Berger graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in honors biology. His first publication while an undergraduate was in the journal Science. After graduating from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, he completed a rotating internship at the Maricopa County General Hospital in Phoenix. A three-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary was followed by a fellowship in retinal diseases at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Berger founded the Retinal Consultants of Austin in the 1980s, the Retina Research Center in 2008 and the Institute for Retina Research foundation a few years later. He has authored numerous chapters for textbooks and has presented grand rounds at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dell Medical School and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Before becoming an affiliate faculty member Dell Medical School, he was a clinical professor of ophthalmology at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where he founded the uveitis clinic. He has taught dozens of medical students from all over Texas and continues to offer student electives at the Retina Research Center. He was awarded honor member status in the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his contributions to education and was elected to membership in the Retina Society. He has presented papers at all the major retina meetings including the Jules Gonin Society. He is Not a member of the American Medical Association. In his leisure time, he enjoys tennis and tracking sports cars at the Circuit of the Americas and other race tracks around Texas. In 2021 he and his first mate, Barbara, are planning the Great Loop cruise aboard the “Lady B.” He has been blessed with four grandchildren from his three daughters.
