About Brian Botero

I am an ambitious first-year, first-generation student and Bonner Scholar at the University of Richmond, studying Math/Econ and Data Science. I am committed to leading civic engagement efforts and exploring my professional interests through roles as a Bonner Scholar, executive member of Scholars of Finance, and student intern for MENTOR VA. Coming from a low-income family in the Chicagoland region, I began my academic journey when I was accepted into Lake Forest Academy. This transformative experience gave me a global perspective, as I lived and studied alongside international students. Now at the University of Richmond, I continue to leverage my education to address larger social issues with compassion, curiosity, and integrity as a Bonner Scholar. I currently serve MENTOR VA, a nonprofit that pairs young people in under-resourced communities throughout Virginia with trained mentors, as their Data and Outreach Coordinator. I am currently employed by the University of Richmond as a Resident Assistant, overseeing nearly 35 first-year residents. In this role, I organize community events and work to create a safe, inclusive environment that fosters positive student life. On campus, I serve as the VP of Professional Development for the Scholars of Finance chapter at the University of Richmond, a national organization dedicated to instilling and refining the values of students interested in finance. Our mission is to combat the industry’s negative reputation by promoting responsible stewardship of global capital. In my free time, I enjoy listening to RnB and rap music. I’m currently teaching myself how to DJ and am part of the ultimate frisbee team, the Spider Monkeys, at the University of Richmond.
