Background

About Brian Carpenter

My Bell Labs 35-year career began in 1984 by quickly learning the UNIX operating system, database management, then compiling developers code while creating a releasable product. Then began creating and uploading the project images in the lab which lead to being responsible for building the patches that were applied after the main release to the field. This led to inheriting developer functions and controlling all firmware projects and burning changes on to PROMs/EPROMs. More skills were developed with creating a project from scratch using the latest available DB management system and NMAKE environment tool to control the code. This eventually led to being the Software Integration team leader and was assigned to develop features in C for the 4ESS project and led to being added to the 4ESS field support team and being assigned trouble tickets in the field. The next opportunity was in Mobility where a tool environment was devised for the access supervision group due to a security requirement to oversee tier 4 non-USA developers when accessing mobility code, then moved to a monitoring team overseeing the entire AT & T UMTS network for network outages on 24 GUI’s 24x7x365. This was tricky while working the night shift as maintenance causing planned outages was ongoing in the network. An opportunity in System Testing for testing incoming UMTS software updates from France that is responsible for installing the loads, ensuring all network elements in lab were working properly and setting up 24 smartphones to emulate test calls while manufacturing artificial attenuation during a prolonged period. checking for call failures and determining if the new release or environmental issues caused failures. The next job was a Project Coordinator role where ensuring E911 testing was completed prior to a cell tower taking live calls.
