A few years ago, I was invited to speak at the annual awards banquet for the Georgia Tech GIFT program. Having been recently named as the Chief Instructor for the Porsche Experience Center but working outside of the technology arena for some time, I needed to relate my current occupation to my background in computer science. At first glance, my automotive and technology roles may seem totally unrelated. But having been a technology evangelist and a sales engineer, and having been involved in technology startups myself, I can list some pertinent parallels. First, racing and performance driving is an intensely challenging learning environment, and some of the subject material is surprisingly more technical than you might think. I have worked with many individuals to help them learn and, in many cases, “unlearn” fundamental aspects of what they thought they knew - driving a car or adopting a new technology. I understand the complexities of human interaction, and have become a very effective communicator, presenter, and motivator, even when dealing with a wide variety of personality types. Like technology, motorsports is a demanding environment where it becomes critical to say the right thing at the right time in the right manner. I have a strong knack for identifying the essential elements required for effective communication and client success, and I am quick to develop a rapport with clients and associates of all different levels. Most importantly, it is critical to listen – really listen – and assess the needs of the client. This is something at which I am well accomplished, now and in all previous roles.
