About Brian Day

Dr. Day received his PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from Purdue University in 1992 and did his post doctoral training at Duke University from 1992 to 1995. He has extensive training in both pharmacology and toxicology with over 30 years of experience. Dr. Day has been at National Jewish Health since 1997 where he is currently a Vice President of Research and Professor of Medicine. Dr. Day has authored over a 140 original scientific publications and is a member of a number of scientific societies including the American Thoracic Society, Society for Free Radicals in Biology and Medicine, and Society of Toxicology. Dr. Day has served as a member of the Scientific Program Committee, and President of the Mechanisms Specialty Section for the Society of Toxicology. Dr Day is on the editorial board of Biochemical Pharmacology and was a member of the NIH Lung Injury, Repair and Remodeling Study Section from 2005 to 2009. As Vice Chair of Medicine, Dr. Day has developed and implemented the Medicine Office of Research (MOOR) that was established to provide basic, translation and clinical research infrastructure in the Department of Medicine at NJH. The MOOR provides research infrastructure through the Basic Science Section and the Clinical and Translational Science Section. These sections provide programs aimed at supporting the medicine faculty research endeavors. The long term goals of these activities is to provide research infrastructure that improves grant funding success rates, foster better communication and collaboration among the researchers and promote the linear integration of basic science findings to the clinic. Dr. Day was appointed as Vice President of Research in 2022. In this new role Dr. Day will continue to promote new opportunities for research at NJH and integrate research operations on the NJH campus through the Office of Research Innovations. Dr. Day has served as the Chief Scientific Officer of Aeolus Pharmaceuticals from 2004 - 2017. Since 1994 he has helped guide the design and synthesis of metalloporphyrins and has discovered a number of their novel activities in biological systems. He is one of the scientific co-founders of Aeolus Pharmaceuticals and an inventor on a majority of the catalytic antioxidant program’s patents.
