Background

About Brian de Lima

Dr. Brian de Lima is a Professor of Music at Centennial College and the coordinator/developer of a new joint program with the University of Toronto Scarborough in Music Business and Technology; a program developed to offer an “ urbanized” education and further opportunities to persons from marginalized communities. Professor de Lima has taught at various colleges and Universities throughout the GTA, and has given lectures at multiple conferences on his passion for the intersection of traditional African American art music and Western Art music, as de Lima is a strong proponent and advocate for teaching Black urban musics from this lens. As an administrator and innovator of curriculum design, he is the recipient of the 2018 York University KMB internship for innovative curricula design that reconciles all the arts as being crucial interdisciplinary aggregates of one another as a means for learning, and as such, should be taught as an interdisciplinary art form. As a professor, he has taught courses in jazz history, jazz performance, jazz theory and analysis, music composition, classical theory, world music, piano performance, community music, 20th century music history and ethnomusicology. Dr. de Lima holds a PhD in ethnomusicology with research interests that examine the importance of learning the arts as a interdisciplinary unified whole. Dr. de Lima also holds a Master of Arts, and has been a critical resource in acting as a board member to several arts organizations within the GTA. As post-secondary coordinator of music, Dr. de Lima has developed his business acumen by sharing in upper level management duties such as team building, recruitment, termination, employee scheduling, board meetings, aiding in departmental budgets and curricula design. Professor de Lima’s ongoing research has been published in all the major scholarly journals such as Routledge, Springer, University of Chicago Press, The Journal of African American Studies, University Press of Mississippi, MusiCultres, etc… Ultimately, Dr. de Lima’s research in curriculum and pedagogy development is aimed at disrupting the ongoing archaic Eurocentric/ formulaic principles that have derailed learning for todays youth, and subsequently, establish new archetypes for learning - especially for persons of colour. Finally, Dr. de Lima has been honoured to offer free jazz workshops to underprivileged communities as part of his “Bebop Workshop” series, and continues to seek new platforms to raise awareness for alternative learning modalities in academia.
