About Brian Devitt

As Head of the Department of Maritime Studies at the National Maritime College of Ireland, part of Munster Technological University, I’m passionate about bridging education, research, and industry to shape the future of Ireland’s maritime and offshore sectors. I lead a team delivering programmes across seafaring, maritime operations, offshore renewables, and logistics, driving curriculum innovation, programme development, and applied research collaboration. I work closely with external funding partners including Skillnet, Springboard+, CILT, and the Offshore Wind Academy to design and deliver new Level 7–9 programmes that meet the evolving needs of industry. My teaching focuses on Maritime Technology and Sustainability within the Master’s in Maritime Operations, and I currently supervise PhD research in maritime communications and Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) in collaboration with the Halpin Research Centre. I’m committed to advancing digitalisation, sustainability, and workforce innovation, supporting Ireland’s transition toward a smarter, greener blue economy.
