Background
About Brian Dietrick
After 25 years of success in the software development industry, I’ve chosen to dedicate the rest of my career to educating and inspiring the next generation of Software Engineering and Computer Science professionals. Throughout my career, I’ve built robust, real-world solutions that have exceeded expectations and are deployed in nearly every country worldwide. My technical background spans cloud, mobile, web, desktop, APIs, integrations, and databases—across platforms including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Mac Catalyst. I’ve led projects end-to-end: gathering requirements, architecting scalable systems, and guiding development through delivery. I also have a lifelong passion for programming languages. I've worked extensively with C# since 2001, and I’m especially excited about Rust, Zig, Mojo, and Julia—languages I actively explore and integrate into my teaching. I currently lead a Rust programming course and plan to expand my curriculum to include additional modern languages. Today, I bring that depth of experience and enthusiasm to my role as a Senior Instructor in the Department of Computer Science at East Carolina University (ECU), where I serve as one of the primary instructors in ECU's Software Engineering program. My mission is to help elevate ECU’s Software Engineering degree into one of the most sought-after public university programs in the country. If you or someone you know is considering a Software Engineering degree, I encourage you to explore ECU’s program. Few institutions offer our level of hands-on, industry-relevant experience. Our curriculum emphasizes agile development, software architecture, and requirements engineering—enhanced by integrated AI tools that prepare graduates to thrive in today’s evolving tech landscape. We’re equipping students with the confidence, capability, and creativity to lead in the age of AI.
