About Brian Donovan
My research explores how the learning of biology affects social cognition. Specifically, I apply social-cognitive theories of learning to design experimental studies that explore how the learning of genetics affects the development of beliefs about social categories. As part of that work, I design intervention studies of learning materials that engage students in scientific argumentation, model-based reasoning, and quantitative reasoning to support their learning of human genetic variation. By translating this research into frameworks that inform science instruction and curriculum development, I hope to create a generation of researchers, teachers, and curriculum writers who know how to teach human genetics in a more socially responsible manner.
