Background
About Brian Doty
For the past 10 years, I’ve been a passionate Agilist—but that’s only part of my story. My professional journey began early, at age 12, working as a busboy at a local skating rink. Since I was underage, I was paid in wooden nickels (literally)—store credit I saved all summer to buy a pair of speed skates. My next job was as a general merchandise clerk at a grocery store, where I was responsible for stocking non-food items—including feminine hygiene products, which, as a 17-year-old, was an unexpected but formative challenge. I also managed the sporting goods counter, which offered everything from postage and money orders to video rentals, hunting licenses, and electronics. After that, I spent time in fast food, working the drive-thru register and learning grill and fryer operations. I then worked as a machine operator in a cast aluminum wheel factory, followed by a stint as a convenience store clerk. Next came a pivotal role at Leggett and Platt (L&P), where I started on the shipping and receiving docks before moving to operate the Continuous Coil machine, eventually becoming a master technician. L&P provided hands-on training in industrial electricity, hydraulics, pneumatics, and welding—skills that still shape my approach today. While working at L&P, I returned to school and earned my bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems with a minor in Networking. After graduation, I joined Walmart Stores, Inc. as a programmer on the Global Tax Team. Over time, I advanced to Senior Programmer Analyst, leading initiatives such as Tax-Free Holidays, server migrations, the Central America (CAM) Gift Card Program, and CAM Tax Report updates. It was at Walmart that I discovered Agile. I transitioned into the role of Scrum Master, guiding our tax team through an Agile transformation. I also joined Walmart’s Agile Skill Guild, helping to develop training content and teaching workshops to fellow associates. Why share all of this? Because it demonstrates the versatility, adaptability, and drive I bring to every role. I’ve never been afraid of hard work or new challenges. My guiding principle has always been simple: See a need, fill the need. My career reflects versatility, adaptability and capability —qualities I’ll bring to any opportunity.
