I've been in broadcasting since 1977. I started out babysitting automation, a system that had a peg board to control the programming. I worked a week before I was no longer needed. It took me 21 years to finally get my dream of getting on the air. Between those 21 years I worked in the theater business. I started in concession, then a projectionist and eventually a Manager. As a manager I was asked to work as "Dirty Harry". That was the nick name the District Manager labeled me she always sent me to her worst theater locations that were problem areas. In dangerous locations or were messy with trouble staff. Once the company fired all union projectionists in Michigan and when that happened all the staff left the theater. I was sent to hire new staff and figure a way to learn this automated projector run system. The plan was to be back running in one month. The new manager they sent with me was to hire his staff and I simply was there to oversee and hold his hand. I walked in the projector room and to my surprise the automation was exactly the same automation that ran the radio automation I was trained on 10 years earlier at KYTN in North Dakota. So I set up a film and I set up the automation and i ran a movie immediately. With that good I was comfortable that once we had at least 4 more employees we could open for business. We didn't need a month. I made sure we could make popcorn, and we had concession items. I called the company and ordered new movies for the weekend. I had the manager call the unemployment office to let them know we needed bodies. We interviewed for two days. Hired a janitor, two cashiers and three concessions and one usher with me and the manager we had a staff. We placed ads in the local paper for movies Friday Saturday and Sunday. Thursday we popped corn and I had a movie party for the new staff and we they watched the movie as I trained the Two ushers and the manager how to use the projector automation. all went well. Friday we had a full house we called in our receipts to home office with their surprise that we made money and showed movies in 3 days not a month out. this is what I accomplish. I get things done! When you have a mess or a problem I find a solution.
